Here in the United States, threats to our water supplies are exacerbated by urban and agricultural runoff, pesticide and toxic pollution, clearcutting of forests, and by overconsumption of aquifers, rivers and streams.
Recent federal proposals to relax Clean Water standards, including allowing increases of mercury pollution from power plants while reducing funding to domestic and international water conservation and pollution-prevention measures are only exacerbating the problem at home and abroad.
A recent survey found that clean fresh drinking water is more important to the majority of Americans than any other issue. While we invest billions of dollars in highways, airports and other infrastructure programs, the Bush administration has proposed cutting the EPA's Clean Water funding.

Blazing heat in central and southeastern Europe and heavy rain and flooding in the north seems to be the storyline these days. But is it global warming? Reuters has a story that shows we may someday have the answers:
Computer simulations may soon be able to show how likely it is that extreme weather events such as the floods and heatwaves that swept Europe this week were caused by climate change, scientists say.“To say you can’t blame one event on global warming isn’t true,” said Oxford University climate scientist Myles Allen.“We can understand in a lot of detail what’s contributing towards the risk of these events.”

Russians to dive below North Pole

The ship will follow an ice-breaker through the Arctic
Russia is sending a mini-submarine to explore the ocean floor below the North Pole and find evidence to support its claims to Arctic territory. Two parliamentarians, including veteran explorer Artur Chilingarov, are part of a team planning to dive 4,200m (14,000 ft) below the Arctic Ocean on Sunday.
The team's ship is following a nuclear powered ice-breaker, setting sail from Murmansk port in the Barents Sea.
Melting ice in the Arctic has raised hopes of accessing energy reserves.
Russia's claim to a vast swathe of territory in the Arctic, thought to contain oil, gas and mineral reserves, has been challenged by other powers, including the US.

The German Environment Ministry this week unveiled a set of highly ambitious proposals that would lead Germany to become the world's most energy-efficient country in the coming years.
Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel told the lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, that the time had come to act. "We have all witnessed the dangers of climate change in the last few months. We only saw winter in the calendar in Germany," he said, alluding to last year's unusually mild winter.

What Are Greenhouse Gases?

Many chemical compounds found in the Earth’s atmosphere act as “greenhouse gases.” These gases allow sunlight to enter the atmosphere freely. When sunlight strikes the Earth’s surface, some of it is reflected back towards space as infrared radiation (heat). Greenhouse gases absorb this infrared radiation and trap the heat in the atmosphere. Over time, the amount of energy sent from the sun to the Earth’s surface should be about the same as the amount of energy radiated back into space, leaving the temperature of the Earth’s surface roughly constant.
Many gases exhibit these “greenhouse” properties. Some of them occur in nature (water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide), while others are exclusively human-made (like gases used for aerosols).

Britain has warned reluctant members of the United Nations that there are few greater threats to global security than climate change, delivering a stark message forecasting armed conflicts over scarce supplies of food, water and land.
On a trip to New York, the foreign secretary, Margaret Beckett, chaired the security council's first debate on global warming. It was convened despite criticism from countries such as India and China which argue that the issue is outside the security council's mandate of maintaining international peace.

Global warming is having a measurable effect on Earth's climate, including agriculture, freshwater resources, and plants and animals on both sea and land. These changes are expected to intensify as temperatures continue to rise.
Those are among the conclusions of a new report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a UN-sponsored group of scientists. A summary of their findings released April 6 outlines climate changes and how researchers expect them to play out as warming continues. Their impact on society, the IPCC report says, will vary depending on the amount of actual temperature increase that occurs and humanity's capacity or ability to adapt to the changes.

Global warming on Mars: may not be unique to just Earth

More of the famous red dust that has resulted in Mars being called the Red Planet may be the cause of why NASA scientists have seen increased warming of the planet over three decades.
NASA researchers led by Lori Fenton, at the Ames Research Center (California) have used climate models used here on the Earth for their modeling of the Martian climate. Their results find that Mars has warmed by about 0.65 degrees Celsius in the past thirty years.
The first mapping of the planet was performed in the mid-1970s and early 1980s when the Viking mission visited Mars as Viking 1 and Viking 2, each consisting of an orbiter and rover. The Fenton team compared the maps produced by the Viking mission with more recent maps produced by the Mars Global Surveyor, which launched in November 1996 and provided data to NASA until November 2006.

Better architecture and energy savings in buildings could do more to fight global warming than all curbs on greenhouse gases agreed under the United Nations' Kyoto Protocol, a U.N. study showed on Thursday.

Better use of concrete, metals and timber in construction and less use of energy for everything from air conditioners to lighting in homes and offices could save billions of dollars in a sector accounting for 30 to 40 percent of world energy use.

"Buildings can play a key role in combating climate change," the U.N. Environment Program said in a report issued in Oslo during a conference on ways to promote economic growth without damaging the environment.

For years, conservationists have warned about over fishing of large sharks in the northwestern Atlantic, as the demand for meat and fins, coupled with slow growth and reproduction rates of many species, has caused sharp declines in populations of hammerheads, duskies and other sharks.

Researchers are now reporting repercussions beyond the declining shark populations. Depletion of large sharks, they write in Friday’s issue of the journal Science, has led to the destruction of the bay scallop fishery along parts of the Eastern seaboard.

The number of Americans with asthma has doubled since 1986, according to the Center of Disease Control. The incidence of allergies has been tremendous, especially among children. And these days one of every 13 schoolchildren in the US is asthmatic.

Seafood species may be depleted within 50 years, scientists claim

Wild seafood stocks could collapse by 2050 – including tuna, striped bass, blue crabs, oysters and clams – devastating food supplies, scientists warn in a major study to be published today.
The study, in the journal Science, stems from four years of research and analysis by scientists in Canada, Sweden and the United States. Among them is J. Emmett Duffy, an ecologist and head of biological sciences at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in Gloucester County.
Duffy described the gist of the paper this way: “Biodiversity matters.”

Global warming is the observed increase in the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere and oceans in recent decades.
The Earth's average near-surface atmospheric temperature rose 0.6 В± 0.2 В°Celsius (1.1 В± 0.4 В°Fahrenheit) in the 20th century. The prevailing scientific opinion on climate change is that "most of the warming observed over the last 50 years is attributable to human activities"[1].
The increased amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases (GHGs) are the primary causes of the human-induced component of warming. They are released by the burning of fossil fuels, land clearing and agriculture, etc. and lead to an increase in the greenhouse effect. The first speculation that a greenhouse effect might occur was by the Swedish chemist Svante Arrhenius in 1897, although it did not become a topic of popular debate until some 90 years later. [2]
The measure of the response to increased GHGs, and other anthropogenic and natural climate forcings, is climate sensitivity. It is found by observational [3] and model studies. This sensitivity is usually expressed in terms of the temperature response expected from a doubling of CO2 in the atmosphere. The current literature estimates sensitivity in the range 1.5вЂ“4.5 В°C (2.7вЂ“8.1 В°F). Models referenced by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) project that global temperatures may increase between 1.4 and 5.8 В°C (2.5 to 10.5 В°F) between 1990 and 2100. The uncertainty in this range results from both the difficulty of estimating the volume of future greenhouse gas emissions and uncertainty about climate sensitivity.
An increase in global temperatures can in turn cause other changes, including a rising sea level and changes in the amount and pattern of precipitation. These changes may increase the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, such as floods, droughts, heat waves, hurricanes, and tornados. Other consequences include higher or lower agricultural yields, glacial retreat, reduced summer streamflows, species extinctions and increases in the ranges of disease vectors. Warming is expected to affect the number and magnitude of these events; however, it is difficult to connect particular events to global warming. Although most studies focus on the period up to 2100, warming (and sea level rise due to thermal expansion) is expected to continue past then, since CO2 has an estimated atmospheric lifetime of 50 to 200 years. [4]. Only a small minority of climate scientists discount the role that humanity's actions have played in recent warming. However, the uncertainty is more significant regarding how much climate change should be expected in the future, and there is a hotly contested political and public debate over what, if anything, should be done to reduce or reverse future warming, and how to deal with the predicted consequences.
