While we invest billions of dollars in highways, airports and other infrastructure programs, the Bush administration has proposed cutting the EPA's Clean Water funding.
We must demand that our political leaders invest in clean water protection and take actions ourselves to reduce our water use. When sunlight strikes the Earth’s surface, some of it is reflected back towards space as infrared radiation (heat). Greenhouse gases absorb this infrared radiation and trap the heat in the atmosphere. Over time, the amount of energy sent from the sun to the Earth’s surface should be about the same as the amount of energy radiated back into space, leaving the temperature of the Earth’s surface roughly constant.
Many gases exhibit these “greenhouse” properties. Some of them occur in nature (water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide), while others are exclusively human-made (like gases used for aerosols).
Climate change threatens security, UK tells UN

· Council debates 'weather of mass destruction'
· US claims other factors more important for peace
Andrew Clark in New York
Wednesday April 18, 2007
The Guardian
Britain has warned reluctant members of the United Nations that there are few greater threats to global security than climate change, delivering a stark message forecasting armed conflicts over scarce supplies of food, water and land.
On a trip to New York, the foreign secretary, Margaret Beckett, chaired the security council's first debate on global warming. It was convened despite criticism from countries such as India and China which argue that the issue is outside the security council's mandate of maintaining international peace.

Take Action!

The Stop Global Warming calculator shows you how much carbon dioxide you can prevent from being released into the atmosphere and how much money you can save by making some small changes in your daily life. It’s our hope that the calculator will promote action, awareness and empowerment by showing you that one person can make a difference and help stop global warming.
There are many simple things you can do in your daily life — what you eat, what you drive, how you build your home — that can have an effect on your immediate surrounding, and on places as far away as Antactica. Here is a list of few things that you can do to make a difference.

Use Compact Fluorescent Bulbs
Replace 3 frequently used light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. Anything we can do to save paper will help reduce the amount of trash going into landfills, and it will also reduce energy use and pollution associated with manufacturing, transporting, and recycling new paper products. Perhaps most importantly, when we save paper, we reduce the need to cut down trees to make new paper.

Whether you have a home office or work in an office with others, you can save paper by implementing some minor changes in your work habits. Here are few ideas.

Save Paper Idea #1: Strive for the “Paperless Office”

Save Paper Idea #2: Review Drafts Using On-Screen Tricks

Save Paper Idea #3: Print Pages, Passages, or Sections

Save Paper Idea #4: Use Double-Sided

Save Paper Idea #5: Print “Two Up”

Save Paper Idea #6: Print Again on the Blank Side

Save Paper Idea #7: Use Obsolete Printouts for Note Paper

Save Paper Idea #8: Paper’s Final Resting Place

Welcome to the Greener Cleaner!

As the nationally recognized leader in professional wet-cleaning technology, The Greener Cleaner’s mission is simple: to provide the highest quality garment care by using methods and materials that are healthy for our customers, our workers and the environment. These changes are expected to intensify as temperatures continue to rise.
Those are among the conclusions of a new report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a UN-sponsored group of scientists. A summary of their findings released April 6 outlines climate changes and how researchers expect them to play out as warming continues. Their impact on society, the IPCC report says, will vary depending on the amount of actual temperature increase that occurs and humanity's capacity or ability to adapt to the changes.

The Man of the Hour

Leonardo DiCaprio, actor, activist
photograph by Annie Leibovitz May 2007

If you go to leonardodicaprio.com, you will find that it is split down the middle. The left half is labeled "Leonardo," and will bring you up-to-date on his filmmaking career (doing rather nicely, with a recent Oscar nomination for his performance in Blood Diamond and, to some tastes, an even stronger performance in best-picture winner The Departed). The right half is labeled "Eco-Site"; it offers guides to various environmental concerns, tips on differences anyone can make, and links to dozens of green organizations and information. Not many stars share their fan face time with gorillas and ferns, but this is the image DiCaprio puts forward to the world: a literal expression of twin passions. A longtime environmentalist—remember his interview in 2000 with then president Bill Clinton for an ABC Earth Day special?—DiCaprio is currently on the boards of both the Natural Resources Defense Council and Global Green USA and has been a tireless promoter of green causes and events. Later this year will see the fusion of his two passions with the release of The 11th Hour, a feature documentary on environmental ills and possible cures, a kind of state-of-the-earth address with gorgeous pictures and eloquent experts, which DiCaprio is producing, co-writing, and narrating. As he says in this remarkable film, as hopeful as it is alarming, "So, we find ourselves on the brink." On the brink of what, it is made plain, is up to us. Their results find that Mars has warmed by about 0.65 degrees Celsius in the past thirty years.
The first mapping of the planet was performed in the mid-1970s and early 1980s when the Viking mission visited Mars as Viking 1 and Viking 2, each consisting of an orbiter and rover. The Fenton team compared the maps produced by the Viking mission with more recent maps produced by the Mars Global Surveyor, which launched in November 1996 and provided data to NASA until November 2006.

The Great Global Warming Swindle (Complete)

Poor Nations to Bear Brunt as World Warms
by: Andrew C. They are released by the burning of fossil fuels, land clearing and agriculture, etc. and lead to an increase in the greenhouse effect. The first speculation that a greenhouse effect might occur was by the Swedish chemist Svante Arrhenius in 1897, although it did not become a topic of popular debate until some 90 years later. [2]
The measure of the response to increased GHGs, and other anthropogenic and natural climate forcings, is climate sensitivity. It is found by observational [3] and model studies. This sensitivity is usually expressed in terms of the temperature response expected from a doubling of CO2 in the atmosphere. The current literature estimates sensitivity in the range 1.5–4.5 °C (2.7–8.1 °F). Models referenced by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) project that global temperatures may increase between 1.4 and 5.8 °C (2.5 to 10.5 °F) between 1990 and 2100. The uncertainty in this range results from both the difficulty of estimating the volume of future greenhouse gas emissions and uncertainty about climate sensitivity.
An increase in global temperatures can in turn cause other changes, including a rising sea level and changes in the amount and pattern of precipitation. These changes may increase the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, such as floods, droughts, heat waves, hurricanes, and tornados. Other consequences include higher or lower agricultural yields, glacial retreat, reduced summer streamflows, species extinctions and increases in the ranges of disease vectors. Warming is expected to affect the number and magnitude of these events; however, it is difficult to connect particular events to global warming. Although most studies focus on the period up to 2100, warming (and sea level rise due to thermal expansion) is expected to continue past then, since CO2 has an estimated atmospheric lifetime of 50 to 200 years. [4]. Only a small minority of climate scientists discount the role that humanity's actions have played in recent warming. However, the uncertainty is more significant regarding how much climate change should be expected in the future, and there is a hotly contested political and public debate over what, if anything, should be done to reduce or reverse future warming, and how to deal with the predicted consequences.
